november 23. we drove back to birmingham in virtual silence, talking only briefly to answer one of the kids’ questions or to speak out loud what our hearts were praying. the question weighed heavily on my heart: were the photographs i was about to take of baby micah going to be the first of many…or the last of a few?

my eight-year-old, abby, kept talking about the bear. mommy, please don’t forget to give it to miss mary michael. and tell her i’m praying every single time i think about him. just make sure she gets the bear, ok? i’ll admit, i probably tossed an off-handed sure will or an i’ll do it over my shoulder toward her in the back seat. but then she said something that reminded me of what we were all holding to. mommy, look at the nametag on the bear. it says “hope”.
