we were driving to meet my parents for dinner when i saw her number come up on my phone. i answered, what’s up, friend? and we chatted like any other time, probably about the kids or school. she started sounding kind of sheepish, though, when the conversation turned to isaiah’s birth. i could tell she was headed somewhere, but i wasn’t sure where until she finally asked her question.

i know it’s a long-shot with your shooting schedule…and it’s totally fine if it doesn’t happen…but what do you think…would you maybe want to be at the hospital with david and me to shoot isaiah’s birth?

squeal. i think that’s all i was able to do in that moment. my too-old-and-slow-to-shoot-weddings plan is birth photography, and it’s been my joy to share in that precious time with many of my clients. but that privilege kicks up into a whole different place when i’m there with a friend. it’s an honor i don’t think i could ever do justice to through words.

after a night of texting back and forth, i met heather and david at the hospital early this morning as it became clear that the lord had chosen november 28 as the day of isaiah’s birth. the air carried a feeling of excitement and ease…

but that soon turned more focused as things began to kick into high gear.

ok, it’s oftentimes true that men are known first and foremost by their job or position in life, but as david literally delivered his son to his first breaths, i couldn’t see him as anything but a loving father in awe of new life.

praise god for his immeasurable gifts!

the only thing left? to share the news with the biggest three blessings at home.

my sweet friends, i’m so thankful for the honor of sharing in this amazing day with you. congratulations on the birth of isaiah james, and praise the lord for the great things he has done!! (a huge thanks to dr. edwards and nurse valle as well. you were an incredible team, and you made me feel so welcome!!)

have you not known? have you not heard? the lord is the everlasting god, the creator of the ends of the earth…

Okay sweet Allison. You are flat out amazing! It killed me not to be there today for his birth, but here I sit with tears strolling down my face (in a sea of boxes might I add) feeling like I was there through your photos. Thank you sweet friend for using the talents that the Lord has blessed you with to share such a moment for the family. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Congratulations to the Platt’s. and Thank you Allison. The pictures are stunning and I think the plan for retirement is a wonderful one. As far as professional options go, what could be more joyful (and sometimes tragic, I’m sure) than shooting weddings or children.

  29. Lynda Williams says:

    David and Heather,
I am one face, in the sea of faces, in church every sunday, with you at the helm, I have grown so much!
For that, I say thank you and we love you.
I also thank you in so many other ways, being the pastor of a “big” church you have a way of making it feel small. Like the journey of Mara Ruth, I will never go to China, but I will never forget the look on Heather’s face when you went back to the orphanage to say good bye to caregiver. O what joy you and Heather have brought to so many along the trail….. We love you and the family!!! Especially the latest addition!!!

  30. Mona Huff says:

This brought tears! I worked in labor and delivery in the mid-60’s when Dads or no one for that matter was allowed in the birthing room. This is how it should be. This creates a bond between father and child and helps Mom to have her mate there.
