it was 16 years ago. september of 1996, to be exact. she was a wide-eyed girl from small town georgia moved to birmingham for what she expected to be a piano performance degree from samford. he was the likeable guy from big town georgia who knew from day one that he would leave samford with a business degree. two weeks into the first year of school, he needed a date to a fraternity party. would she like to go?

it was 12 years ago. february of 2000, to be exact. she was a more confident version of her 18-year-old self, and he was the man that she had grown to love with all her heart. as they were both preparing to graduate with business degrees (funny how that happened), he asked her to dinner one night with an all-important question. would she spend the rest of her life with him?

he promised to protect her…

to make her laugh…

and to always be there when things got tough.

he promised to hold her up when she couldn’t do it herself…

and to continually point her to the lord’s goodness and grace in all situations.

but there’s something the girl knows now that she didn’t know back then: not only would he richly bless her life as a husband, but he would continually cause her to sit back and marvel at how beautifully he would love their children.

josh, as i type this julia is curled up in your arms, the two of you sleeping peacefully beside me. i’m feeling overwhelmed with thankfulness. i’m thankful for her, i’m thankful for you, and i’m thankful that i said yes all those years ago. i love you so much.

**most of you probably know who anna is by now. she’s my second-shooter for weddings and time and time again, couples and their families tell me what a blessing she was on their wedding day and how thankful they were to have her there. well i got to be on the receiving end of that immeasurable blessing when anna joined josh and me for julia’s arrival earlier this week. she talked with us, laughed with us, and even cried with us over the miracle we were witness to in julia’s birth. anna, i have to wipe the tears every single time i look at these photos, and i count it an honor to have had you there on such a precious day in the life of our family. i love you dearly and am so incredibly thankful for the gift you’ve given us in the way you documented julia’s birth. thank you just isn’t enough.**
